About the Drive-Thru Nasal Swab for COVID/FLU/RSV

Waking up with a runny nose may not be a cause for alarm for many people. However, other symptoms like a headache, coughing, sneezing, or even fever may signal something else. When the pandemic started, most people had challenges differentiating between COVID, influenza A, influenza B and RSV. Doctors had to develop a unique test that gave fast results for the four viruses. Respiratory infections are quite similar, and you may not know what is ailing your child if proper testing is not done.

Our drive-thru testing service provides a good opportunity to check what could make you or your child feel unwell and provide the right treatment to aid in quick recovery. You don’t need a doctor’s referral to get tested, just give us a call to secure an appointment with the drive-thru swab station. We offer same-day results, so you can begin treatment immediately when indicated. Here at Nebraska Home Pediatrics we make this test as simple and fast as possible for your child, so they can get back home and rest.

How the Testing is Done

Once you drive into the testing area, our staff will first make sure patient registration is complete and check in the patient. The medical providers performing the test will be wearing personal protective equipment. The swab is soft-tipped and the specimen is collected by nasopharyngeal route, rather than nasal, from one side. It’s important to ensure your child is relaxed as much as possible as they will feel a tickling sensation that could cause their eyes to water or make them sneeze.

Once the swabbing is done, the nurse places the swab tip into the accompanying tube of special fluid, which deactivates the virus and preserves the virus nucleic acid. From there, you can leave and wait for results to be available in about 45 minutes. Our team will share the results through your method of choice.
